SMART CITY: URBAN PLANNING AND DIGITAL

What is it that makes a city “smart”? A city can be called smart if it’s able to be sustainable from different points of view that are, above all, integrated with each other: economic, environmental and social.

In order to achieve this, it is now essential to make use of the digital world, connectivity and new technologies, because they make it possible to monitor various aspects of a city and its inhabitants, aggregate data with each other and exchange information between different systems for an integrated and optimal management of the entire city (for example digitized parking, telehealth, energy performance of buildings, tourist reception…).

Digital can also become useful and strategic as a function of urban planning. A well-known car manufacturer is thinking about it, which has developed software to analyze city traffic, starting experimentation at Carmel (Indiana, USA): it involves collecting data through camera images, which are then analyzed by artificial intelligence, and employing the information obtained for the study of ever-better urban mobility.

Looking forward, such data could also be used to make the city design of city’s infrastructure safer, more efficient and effective and improve local quality of life, for example, by identifying critical areas that need more parking or the best spots to install electric charging stations, but also by analyzing the routes most frequented by cyclists in order to implement bike lanes.

An integrated view to contribute to the well-being of cities and its citizens, this is the idea behind our Integrated Territorial Investment projects: working on individual smart cities and then connecting them together to arrive at a SmartLand.
